Pet-Friendlier

I was so pleased to read the commentary by Diane Calkins. Such an article was overdue but better late than never.

I have visited the shelter at San Clemente, in Orange County, and was delighted to find that it is run entirely by volunteer staff, except for one paid manager, who is not in uniform.

Couches filled with people and pets met my entering eyes, and I was told that the pets are from the cages--each pet gets at least an hour a day of socializing and walks. The runs are large and each has an igloo type of shelter for the pets’ privacy and shade--and they go indoors at night.

The desk is informal, low and friendly (no high counters and glass barriers) and applications for adoption are handled with a great deal of concern for the animal and its prospective new home.

I do not know why San Diego has not allowed such innovations here. Perhaps this is the right time.
