VENTURA FREEWAY : Report on Elevated Rail Line Delayed

Share

Completion of an environmental impact report on a proposal to build a rail line above the Ventura Freeway has been delayed--in part because of extensive public comment on the issue.

A draft report on the elevated rail line was released in the fall, and county planners predicted that they would have a final study to the Los Angeles County Planning Commission by this month.

But the report still is not complete. Planners are scheduled to appear before the commission April 22 to give a status report, project manager David Mieger said Monday.

Mieger said more than 500 public comments were received--including 244 phoned in to an experimental hot line--and some raised new issues that must be addressed before the commission can decide whether a 16.2-mile freeway rail route would be a feasible alternative to an already studied route along Southern Pacific’s right of way between North Hollywood and Warner Center.

Completion of the report is not expected until “after April, but we won’t know until we ask the commissioners,” Mieger said.
