COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Ventura’s 11-Run 5th Flattens Bakersfield, 22-5

Ventura College sent 17 batters to the plate in its 11-run fifth inning en route to a 22-5 win over visiting Bakersfield in a Western State Conference baseball game Tuesday.

Thirteen consecutive batters reached base for Ventura (15-5, 8-2 in conference play) in the fifth inning and Mitch King (three hits, two runs batted in) and Chris Bargsten each had two hits in the inning.

A two-run double by Bargsten in the fifth cut Bakersfield’s lead to 5-4, and Chris Marsden followed with a triple to tie the score. Ryan McMullen doubled home Marsden to give Ventura the lead for good.

Tim Cornish had four of Ventura’s 21 hits, and Kasha Clemons and David Frazier each added three.

Andy Moffatt (3-1) pitched the final six innings, allowing only three hits and one run. Moffatt struck out seven and walked two.

In other baseball games:

Cuesta 6, Valley 2--Carlos Olmos and Mike Murray accounted for five of host Valley’s six hits in a WSC game. Olmos had three hits and Murray two for Valley (10-13, 5-5).

Pierce 10, Oxnard 7--Visiting Pierce, which clobbered Oxnard, 30-6, the last time the teams met, built a 9-0 lead and hung on for the WSC victory. Pierce (17-2, 9-1) sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored eight runs, the big blow a two-run double by Brian Smith that gave the Brahmas a 3-0 lead. Pierce had only seven hits.

Steve Susko had three hits for Oxnard (2-18, 2-8) and Adrian Estrada and Susko each had two.

Canyons 3, Glendale 1--Freshman right-hander R.J. Simone (4-1) gave up four hits over 8 2/3 innings in a WSC game at Glendale.

Walter White and Pat DeBoer each had two hits for Canyons (1-12, 6-4).

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 8, Pierce 0--Heather Santiago struck out seven and limited Pierce to four hits in a WSC game at Moorpark. Santiago improved to 10-3.
