Montebello : Council Wants Station on New Commuter Rail Line

Montebello wants to get on board the upcoming Riverside-to-Los Angeles commuter rail line with a station of its own, the City Council decided this week.

The council authorized staff members to send a resolution within the next week to the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission, stating that the city supports a Montebello commuter rail station.

“The trains are going to run through Montebello anyway. The only question is whether they’ll stop here,” Councilman William Molinari said at Tuesday’s meeting.

The commuter line, expected to begin service between Riverside and downtown Los Angeles in the spring of 1993, will have six stops along the 58-mile corridor. Only three will be in Los Angeles County. The Transportation Commission already has selected Pomona and the City of Industry for two of the stops.

Purchasing land and building a Montebello station probably would cost $5 million, city staff members said. Officials said one of two privately owned sites in south Montebello could make a prime location for the station. They will seek funding help for the proposed station from state and local transportation sources as well as the private sector.
