NEWBURY PARK : Acid Spill Forces Closure of Overpass

Share

A muriatic acid spill forced officials to close a Ventura Freeway overpass in Newbury Park for five hours while crews cleaned up the mess, authorities said Wednesday.

The incident started just after 6 p.m. Tuesday when the Ventura County Fire Department received a call that a pool of acid had been found on the Wendy Drive overpass, a Fire Department spokesman said.

A hazardous materials team determined the substance to be muriatic acid, a form of hydrochloric acid that is often used to clean swimming pools, she said.

No source for the spill was discovered, Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Funchess said.

State Department of Transportation officials closed the overpass and the northbound off-ramp to Wendy Drive while the team assessed the situation and cleaned up the acid, he said.

The overpass was reopened at 11:30 p.m.
