NHL ROUNDUP : Rangers Beat Flyers for Their 49th Victory, Tying Franchise Record Set by ‘70-71 Team
The New York Rangers matched their franchise record for victories with a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday night at New York.
The 1970-71 Rangers also won 49 games. The Rangers have three more chances to reach 50 for the first time.
The loss put the Flyers closer to playoff elimination. With five games left, the Flyers trail fourth-place Pittsburgh by eight points.
Defenseman Brian Leetch, who assisted on the Rangers’ first goal, scored the tiebreaker early in the third period. The Rangers are 7-0-1 in their last eight games.
Buffalo 5, Toronto 2--Donald Audette scored goals 14 seconds apart in the first period at Buffalo to stop the Maple Leafs. Toronto had won four of its last five games.
Winnipeg 2, Montreal 2--Russ Courtnall scored late in the third period at Winnipeg to give the Canadiens a tie, but the Jets moved closer to a playoff spot.
With five games to play, the Jets lead Calgary by six points in the battle for the last playoff spot in the Smythe Division.
