LOS ANGELES : Flag to Fly in Honor of Missing Servicemen
The Los Angeles City Council Wednesday agreed to fly a flag outside City Hall in honor of the 30,000-plus U.S. veterans of foreign wars who are still missing.
A small group of veterans who attended the council meeting praised its members for taking what they said was an important, albeit symbolic, step.
“We’ve hassled and we’ve asked for seven years,” said Nick Nickelson, chairman of a veterans advisory committee appointed by Mayor Tom Bradley. “This tells us the city is aware of the POW/MIA (prisoner of war/missing in action) issue. It encompasses all veterans in action.”
Current city law only allows government flags to be flown at City Hall. Under the council’s action, the city’s administrative code will be amended to make way for the veterans’ flag on the Spring Street side of the building.
