LOS ANGELES : Schools to Make Plans for Condom Handouts

Share

The Los Angeles Unified School District plans to begin passing out condoms on high school campuses by mid-April, leaving the specifics on how to distribute them up to each school, officials said Thursday.

Arrangements are being made to purchase nearly 13,000 condoms from the Los Angeles County Department of Health at a cost of about $600, said Beverly Martin, administrative consultant in the office of the deputy superintendent. The district’s 49 senior high schools will each receive about 250 condoms, Martin said.

“Each high school will have its own committee,” Martin said. “The main thing they have to do is get a distribution location and determine who will make the distributions.”

The Board of Education narrowly approved the condom program in January as part of a 10-point plan to strengthen the district’s AIDS education and prevention efforts. Students will be allowed to obtain condoms as long as their parents do not object.
