Stanford’s Jeff Rouse set an American record in the backstroke portion of the 400-yard medley relay in the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships at Indianapolis, swimming the 100 meters in 46.22 seconds, better than the 46.50 of teammate Brian Retterer last year.

Rouse, Tyler Mayfield, Trip Zedlitz and Retterer won the relay in an American-record 3 minutes 8.39 seconds, breaking the mark of 3:09.70 set by Texas in 1990.

Stanford led the first day over Texas, 200-117, with UCLA third.
