A 61-year-old Oceanside man was injured Friday after he tumbled about 12 feet over a seawall and onto a rock-strewn area at Emma Wood State Beach, officials said.
Kenneth J. Preston was taken to Ventura County Medical Center where he was listed in guarded condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The 9:35 a.m. incident occurred as Preston, his wife, Marian, and two friends walked to breakfast along the seawall path, officials said. His wife said he suffers from an equilibrium disorder.
Two lifeguards, Sean Martin and Jeff Hariell, who were surfing nearby, saw passersby running to the scene and joined in. “When we saw him, we thought we would have to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation because of his age,” Martin said.
The two men tended to Preston, who received facial cuts and bruises, until a rescue team from the Ventura County Fire Department arrived at the scene.
