OAK PARK : Students to Enter Academic Contest

Share

Middle school students from the Conejo Unified and Oak Park Unified school districts will join students from Los Angeles today for the fifth annual Celebration of Learning in Calabasas.

The event, which focuses on academic competition and physical education, was established in 1987 when business leaders and school district officials teamed up to create an event to recognize academic achievement and foster unity among students from different districts, officials said.

This year’s event will bring together almost 300 seventh- and eighth-grade students, including a large contingent from the Las Virgenes School District in Los Angeles County.

Academic competitions in a wide array of subjects, including math, science, writing and social science, highlight the event, which culminates in a Super Quiz involving students from all three districts.

Parents are invited to participate in the awards ceremony after the Super Quiz.

Celebration of Learning 1992 will have a Western theme, with special events including a demonstration by the Ventura County sheriff’s equestrian unit; Western-style line dancing led by competition champion Joe Nardo; and a presentation on the care of horses and their equipment.

The program will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the A. E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas.

Hundreds of community volunteers are expected to assist with the event, including parent volunteers from the A. E. Wright school.
