LAKE CASITAS : Powwow Granted Temporary Home

Share

A popular American Indian powwow attended by more than 8,000 people last year has found a semi-permanent home at Lake Casitas.

The Casitas Municipal Water District board voted this week to allow organizers to stage the Eagle Point Pow-Wow at Lake Casitas each May for the next five years.

Organizers hope that the annual powwow, which is also a benefit for the California Indian Education Center in Ventura, will draw American Indians from across the western United States.

“There is very little Indian activity in Ventura County,” said Richard Wixon, a founding member of the Native American Inter-Tribal Assn. for Ventura County and the main organizer of the powwow.

“What we are hoping the annual powwow will do is to get some of the Indians from across the western United States to come in and work with the locals,” Wixon said.

Plans for the May 16-17 event include a performance by American Indian dancers, the re-enactment of a Western-style gunfight and the sale of Indian crafts and food.

“From our perspective, it is a good event for the local community,” said Richard Hajas, Casitas assistant general manager. “It is an opportunity for people to learn quite a bit about the local native tribes and what their customs are.”
