LOS ANGELES : Candidacy Ruling Favors Antonovich

A candidate for the 5th District seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors failed Friday in an attempt to prevent Supervisor Mike Antonovich from including his candidate statement on the June 2 ballot.

Craig Freis of Glendale, who is running against Antonovich, alleged in a Superior Court lawsuit that Antonovich violated the election code by delivering the candidate statement to the county registrar-recorder a week after the supervisor filed for reelection.

Freis and his attorney, Stanley Clark, maintained that the election code calls for the two documents to be filed simultaneously. But the court ruled that separate filings had been common practice in the county for years, supported by a county counsel’s opinion reached nearly 20 years ago.

“My feeling is the judge ducked because he thought he would be opening up more than he wanted to get into,” Clark said.

Freis lost his bid to identify himself as “Tax Freeze Freis” on the ballot and list his occupation as “tax reduction advocate.” The judge held that would be a form of campaigning.

Clark said Freis had not yet decided whether to appeal.

Freis is one of six candidates running against Antonovich.
