Anita Colby; Top Model, Writer, Actress

NEW YORK — Model and writer Anita Colby, who became known as “The Face” after she appeared on the cover of Time magazine nearly 60 years ago, has died of lung disease. She was 77.
Miss Colby, who died Friday, was 19 when she joined the John Powers agency in New York, where she became the best-known and highest-paid model in America at the time. She was the first model to earn $100 an hour and once appeared on the covers of 15 magazines during one month.
She starred in nine movies, including “Mary, Queen of Scots” and “Brute Force,” and was hired as a studio executive at Paramount Pictures. She also appeared for six months as a co-host of NBC’s “Today” show.
Her writing credits include “Anita Colby’s Beauty Book,” and a syndicated column for Women’s News Service, “Anita Says.”
