2 Fugitives Captured in Hotel
Santa Monica police captured two fugitives, one a convicted murderer, hiding out in a Santa Monica hotel on Thursday, authorities said.
Scott Franz, 28, and Richard Fennen, 39, escaped together from a New Jersey prison March 22, Santa Monica Police Sgt. Ray Cooper said.
Franz was serving a sentence for murdering his parents in 1984. Fennen was serving a robbery sentence, Cooper said.
New Jersey authorities warned police that the escapees could be headed their way, Cooper said. Police found and questioned a possible relative of one of the men and were able to trace the pair to the Ocean Park Hotel at 2680 32nd St.
Police phoned their hotel room and waited until one of the men emerged before moving in for the arrest about 2:30 p.m. The men were unarmed. They were to be sent to the Los Angeles County jail to await extradition hearings.
