An 18-year-old sailor, who was arrested in connection with the slayings of his two roommates in City Heights, was expected to return to San Diego on Friday after an extradition hearing in Las Vegas, police said.

Christopher Welters was arrested Wednesday by Las Vegas police as he entered a Jeep Wrangler owned by one of the victims, San Diego Homicide Lt. John Welter said.

Las Vegas police began watching the Jeep on Wednesday after police computers informed them that it had been reported missing in connection with a double murder. Also recovered was a semi-automatic handgun, believed to be used in the murders, Welter said.

Thomas J. Gulka, 22, of Ohio and Thomas W. Grant, 22, of Florida were discovered dead Tuesday night in the apartment they shared in the 4800 block of Lantana Drive. Both men had been shot in the head.

Welter said the slayings appeared to be the result of an argument, but he said a clear motive had not been established.

Welters, a crewman on the amphibious transport dock Cleveland is from Circle Pines, Minn., Robinson said. Gulka and Grant were crewmen on the amphibious assault ship Tarawa.
