After successive rainouts, the Orange County Coaches Assn. all-star soccer matches finally were played Friday, and it was worth the wait.

Not only had the Chapman University field sufficiently recovered from its swamp-like condition, but the four teams of Orange County’s best senior soccer players provided two solidly played, competitive matches.

The North won both matches, 4-3, giving North teams a perfect record in the two years the event has been held in this format.

The North girls rallied to win, coming from a 3-2, fourth-quarter deficit on goals by Jennifer Munsen of of Villa Park and Kari Maeda of Foothill.

Maeda’s goal was her second of the match and came with about three minutes remaining. Anna Klein (Loara) scored the other goal for the North. Debbie Klein (Marina), Danielle Straub (Estancia) and Jill Florey (Mission Viejo) scored for the South, which had only 13 players on its roster and because of injuries, was forced to play with only nine field players for several minutes during the fourth quarter.

But the South was at full strength in the third quarter when it was outshot, 11-4. Only some spectacular saves by South goalkeeper Allegra Garcia of El Toro, who had eight saves in the quarter, prevented the North from taking a big lead.

It took two 10-minute overtime periods to decide the boys’ match.

The winning margin was provided by the North’s Juan Viveros of Orange, who scored on a penalty kick three minutes into the first overtime period.

Viveros had taken a shot from close range that was saved by South field player Jeff Rynders of Capistrano Valley. When it became apparent that the ball would find the net, Rynders fell on it.

Rynders’ strategy nearly paid off because South goalkeeper Matt Williams of Irvine was able to get his finger tips on Viveros’ penalty kick.

The South had several good chances to tie the score in the second overtime period, including one shot that was headed away by North defender Jared Abe of Los Alamitos just before it would have scored.

Jason Martinez (El Modena), Kenny Takaki (Sunny Hills) and an own goal accounted for the North’s other goals. Chris Martin (Ocean View), Jose Escudero (Saddleback) and Miguel Abarca (Santa Ana) scored for the South.
