Gennaro’s 3 Homers Lead SDSU

Brad Gennaro became the first Aztec to hit three home runs in a game as San Diego State swept a doubleheader from host Air Force, 7-5 and 10-9, Saturday. Gennaro went one for three with an RBI in the first game, before breaking loose in the second game with a four-for-four, seven-RBI performance.

He hit his first homer in the third with one on, his second in the fifth with the bases empty and his third was a grand slam in the sixth. Gennaro, a junior right fielder from St. Augustine, had only one homer this season.

Aztec designated hitter Marcelino Garcia hit his first in the fourth with one on. Entering the doubleheader, SDSU had only six homers. Air Force trailed 10-5 entering the seventh, but rallied for four runs before the Aztecs’ Benjie Grigsbgy came on to get his third save on a strike out.

In the first game, Steve Dietz had two doubles and three RBIs and Scott Hofstede (4-0) pitched the Aztecs’ second complete game of the season. SDSU improved to 24-7 overall and 8-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. Air Force fell to 20-7, 3-1.

Rich Miller had a homer and a double in Point Loma Nazarene’s 9-6 opening-game victory over host Christ College Irvine in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Christ College defeated PLNC, 11-5, in the second game.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Fourteenth-ranked University of San Diego won four of six singles matches and went on to defeat visiting Brigham Young, 6-3, in nonconference play. Laura Richards (ranked 22nd), Julie McKeon (ranked 17th), Tuck Kacharoen and Karen Lauer won in singles for the Toreros (13-3). Richards and McKeon (ranked 26th) and Laura Mannisto and Lauer won at No. 1 and 2 doubles.

Singles victories by Susheel Gulati and Paige Hammond helped No. 15 SDSU to a 5-4 decision over Wisconsin. Gulati defeated Marija Neubauer, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 and Hammond beat Stephany Benz, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6. The Aztecs improved to 9-6. The Badgers are 8-11.

MEN’S TENNIS

USD got singles victories from Kevin Bradley and Ignacio Martinez, but without No. 1 player Jose Luis Noriega, the No. 23 Toreros were no match for UC Irvine in a 7-2 loss. USD fell to 10-7. The unranked Anteaters are 9-8.

Point Loma Nazarene defeated visiting Loyola Marymount, 9-0. Enrique Gujardo defeated Nate Narkthong, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 singles for PLNC (13-2). LMU fell to 0-11.

TRACK AND FIELD

Seven different Point Loma Nazarene men earned first place finishes, but the Crusaders (134 points) took second to host Azusa Pacific (187 points) at the Golden State Athletic Conference championships. Anna Mark posted victories in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump for PLNC’s women, who also finished second to Azusa, 137-115.

Tim Williams of the San Diego Track Club swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the 11th SEMotion Relays at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Williams won the 100 in 10.49 seconds, the 200 in 20.89.

WATER POLO

UC San Diego’s women water polo team won twice at the UCLA Invitational. The Tritons, ranked third nationally, defeated UC Irvine 20-4 behind Melinda Hanley’s five goals and Jane Quin-Harkin’s four goals. UCSD (8-1), the defending USA Water Polo champion, also beat UC Santa Barbara, 10-5, behind Jamie Dailey’s five goals and Brenda Reiton’s four goals.

SOFTBALL

UCSD and USD split a doubleheader in La Jolla. Sara Vaplon was two for three and doubled home two runs in the Tritons’ three-run fourth inning as UCSD won the opener, 3-0. Melissa Reinard, Aimee Reinard and Julie Doria keyed a five-run third inning with singles for USD, which won the nightcap, 7-3.
