Rodrick J. Cox; Retired Studio Foreman

Rodrick J. Cox, who worked as a property department foreman on many films and television shows, has died at his Sun Valley home. He was 88.

Cox died Monday of complications of emphysema, said his son Gene Cox of Studio City.

Born in Belton, Tex., Cox came to California in 1922 and worked as a grocery store clerk in North Hollywood. In the late 1920s, he went to work as a foreman at Warner Bros., installing shrubs and other greenery on sets.

Cox later moved into property departments, working on “Dragnet” at Republic Studios and “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” at Desilu Studios. He retired in the mid-1960s.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Tujunga and the Warner Bros. Retirees Club.

In addition to his son Gene, Cox is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Margaret Cox of Sun Valley; sons Lee Cox of Sun Valley and Bill Cox of Glendale, Ariz.; sister Leora Nylander of Burbank; eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is planned from 5 to 8:30 p.m. today at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Mortuary, 10621 Victory Blvd., in North Hollywood. Pierce Brothers Valhalla Mortuary is also handling the arrangements. A funeral, with burial to follow, is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Pierce Brothers Valhalla. Donations can be made in Cox’s name to the Motion Picture & Television Fund.
