Pyramid Lake Boasts Lunker Striped Bass
Striped bass have surfaced at Pyramid Lake in Los Angeles County, and the striper crowd has wasted little time in getting in on the action.
Steve Jackson of Huntington Beach, using a homemade lure, caught four stripers weighing 5-13 pounds. Jackson’s companion, Barry Vandermeulen, used a similar lure to get three stripers 5-8 pounds.
PUDDINGSTONE RESERVOIR--Largemouth bass picking up on plastic worms, biting primarily in shallows at Sait Boat Cove and off points. Bluegills and crappie biting at east end. Meal worm and red worms working. Catfish fair off north shore.
LAKE PERRIS--Largemouth bass fair at east end on crawfish and plastic worms. Trout slow to fair, biting near ramp and dam on nightcrawlers. Other species slow.
IRVINE LAKE--Trout averaging about two pounds continue to bite on green and yellow Power Bait. Trout Island, Sierra Cove, Santiago Flats and west shore all producing. Largemouth bass, catfish, bluegills and crappie picking up.
LAKE CACHUMA--Trout biting on needlefish lures at east end and near dam. Shore fishermen getting some on Power Bait Harvey’s Bay. Bluegills and crappie fair at Johnson’s Bay. Catfish fair at night on mackerel and clams. Largemouth bass fair on plastic worms and spinnerbaits.
LAKE CASITAS--Trout and bass providing most action. Trout fishermen doing best at dam with needlefish lures. Bonnie, Crystal and Jim Loop, Los Angeles, 15 trout, 14.2 pounds. Bass active in weeds to 10 feet. Mike Costa, Ventura, 11-8 bass on shad. Other species slow.
PYRAMID LAKE--Trout plant on Monday stirred striped bass into action in marina. Steve Jackson, Huntington Beach, four stripers between 5-13 pounds. Barry Vandermeulen, Huntington Beach, three stripers 5-8 pounds. Largemouth bass active at 4-10 pounds. Spinnerbaits and plastic worms working best. Ron Morgan, Frazier Park, 8-0 bass. Steve Rosenbloom, Westminster, four bass averaging 2-8. Catfish fair. Lorenzo Cordova, North Edwards, 15-0 catfish, anchovy in marina. Ray Javan, Marida del Rey, 8-0 catfish, jig at Glory Hole.
LAKE PIRU--Trollers using lead-core line at 6-7 colors and bikini needlefish or trout-pattern Rapalas getting most limits, primarily from dam and San Felicia Cove. Bait fishermen using green Power Bait also doing well. Largemouth bass. Jerry Peterson, Lancaster, five bass, largest 6-0. Crappie picking up, primarily in coves and swimming area. Clear mini-jigs working best. Seminar: Crappie, by John Beale, Saturday at 10 a.m. Cost is $5, proceeds earmarked for Santa Clarita Child and Family Development Center.
LAKE CASTAIC--Largemouth bass fair in both reservoirs. Nick Jubilabo and Henry Pegracia, Alhambra, 9-4 and 5-8 bass, brown plastic worms in upper lake. Tony Grebinoski, San Fernando, 8-12 bass, nightcrawler at lower lake. Steve Choi, Rowland Heights, 8-0 bass, plastic worm in upper lake. Catfish slow to fair in upper lake. Charley Panichi, Granada Hills, 16-8 catfish.
SAN DIEGO LAKES--El Capitan: Largemouth bass active in shallows. Steven Fasett, San Diego, 10-4 bass, waterdog at north end. Crappie very good near structure, biting on mini-jigs. Bluegills fair. Hodges: Largemouth bass fair. Frank Tarantino, San Diego, 10-4 bass, blue plastic worm at dam. Catfish biting throughout lake. Bluegills fair. Miramar: Trout providing most action, biting primarily at east end and Moe’s Hole. Largemouth bass fair. Donald Shepard, San Diego, 11-3 bass, black striped plastic worm at Director’s Point. Red ear perch fair. Murray: Largemouth bass fair in shallows. Trout very good on Power Bait at dam buoy line. Otay: Largemouth bass fair. Doug DeWitt, La Mesa, 10-0 bass, crank bait at Otay Arm. Bluegills and crappie very good. Catfish slow to fair. San Vicente: Largemouth bass very good in shallows throughout lake. Kenny Browen, San Diego, 9-0 bass, crawfish at island. Trout good on Power Bait. Southerland: Largemouth bass and trout fair. Largemouth bass active at Mesa Grande Arm and west bank. Crappie and catfish slow to fair.
