Monitor Channel Folds: After less than a year on the air, the Monitor Channel has folded after a dispute within the Christian Science Church over the cost of the ambitious expansion into television. The station’s normal mix of news, public affairs and entertainment shows was to end at midnight Wednesday. Reruns of Monitor programs will be broadcast to nearly 5 million cable households until June 15. Most of the station’s 400 employees received pink slips last week. Negotiations continue to sell the channel, a move that church officials mandated last month. The dispute over expanding into television became an uproar when the church admitted that it had to borrow $41.5 million from pension funds to cover cash needs.
