BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Davis Returns, Hopes to Face Reds

After missing three games with a herniated disk in his neck, Eric Davis started in left field on Sunday against the Atlanta Braves and was held hitless in three official at-bats.

Davis said afterward his status is still day to day.

“I’m the only one that can determine that, as to how I feel,” said Davis, who did walk with the bases loaded to drive in a run. “I don’t know how I’ll feel tomorrow. I’m going to keep my fingers crossed.”

Davis said he is receiving treatment three to four times a day on his neck. After Sunday’s game, Davis’ right shoulder was packed with nice.

“I worked three days to get to where I could move it,” he said.

Davis said he was not motivated to return in time for tonight’s start of a series with his former team, the Cincinnati Reds.

“I’m over that,” he said. “I don’t have time about that. That’s the past.”

Later, though, Davis conceded there would be some emotion.

“It’s going to be strange,” he acknowledged. “I’m not going to say I won’t feel anything. It will be strange. But once the game starts, I’ll get into the flow of the game.”

Reliever Jay Howell, still nursing a sore shoulder, was eligible to come off the disabled list but did not. The Dodgers are hoping he can pitch in consecutive games this week for the Class-A Vero Beach Dodgers.

“Wednesday, we’ll be in a better situation to see what the forecast is,” Dodger Vice President Fred Clarie said Sunday. “When we bring him here, we’ve got to bring him here to fulfill all the things we need him to do. We can’t favor him.”. . . The news was worse for another injured Dodger, pitcher Rudy Seanez, whose back stiffened after pitching three innings in a simulated game Friday. Seanez will fly to Los Angeles today to be examined by Dr. Robert Watkins. . . . Deion Sanders of the Braves extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a ground-ball double off of second baseman Juan Samuel’s glove in the eighth inning.
