SAN DIEGO : General Dynamics to Pay for ’89 Spill
General Dynamics agreed Tuesday to pay San Diego County more than $50,000, the penalty for spilling 10,000 gallons of toxic chemicals in 1989, the district attorney’s office announced.
The New Year’s Eve spill at 3302 Pacific Highway allowed a solution of nitric and hydrofluoric acid to seep into the ground surrounding the company’s aluminum etching tanks. General Dynamic used the extremely acidic solutions to “eat away” at aluminum parts dipped into the tanks, said Jim Pitts, a spokesman for the district attorney.
General Dynamics did not admit to any of the allegations but agreed to pay the penalty, Pitt said. The company will pay a $50,000 fine and reimburse the county’s Hazardous Materials Management Division $4,130 for costs relating to the spill investigation.
