Sidekicks Defeat Cleveland in MSL Semifinals

David Doyle scored his second goal of the game at 7:54 of overtime, giving Dallas an 8-7 victory over Cleveland in the remaining Major Soccer League semifinal series Tuesday at the Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio.

The Sidekicks lead the best-of-seven series, 3-1, and are one victory from moving into the championship series against the Sockers.

The last three games of the semifinals have gone to overtime.

Former Socker Zorn Karic led Cleveland with four goals and two assists--a Crunch record for the most points in a playoff game.

Seven players scored for Dallas.

HOCKEY

The Gulls announced the signing of Vice President/General Manager Don Waddell to a two-year contract extension. Waddell, who led the team to a 45-28-9 record and 99 points, said he will step down as coach. Terms of the deal were not announced.

BASEBALL

UC San Diego had a strange doubleheader sweep, winning, 13-5 over Occidental and 15-3 over Cal Tech, at the same time but at different sites.

SIGNING

Julie Cheskaty, a 5-9 off guard from Francis Parker, signed a basketball letter of intent with Idaho State. Cheskaty, who averaged 21 points, was selected the CIF 1-A player of the year last season.
