Marc Wilmots scored midway through the first half as Belgium beat Cyprus, 1-0, in the opening game of European qualifying for the 1994 World Cup. In other games, Spain beat Albania, 3-0; Czechoslovakia tied Germany, 1-1, and Sweden beat Tunisia, 1-0.

Security was heavy at Stahov Stadium in Prague after several hundred teen-age Germans went on a rampage through downtown earlier in the day, throwing bottles and smashing car windows.

Dozens were detained and 27 German fans were expelled, but there appeared to be no serious incidents among the 12,000 Czech and German fans at the match.
