COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Olivas Sparks Chapman to Sweep of Riverside

Sandy Olivas had four RBIs in the first game Wednesday and hit her seventh home run in the second as Chapman swept a California Collegiate Athletic Association softball doubleheader from UC Riverside at Chapman.

Olivas went three for three and scored a run for Chapman (25-16, 4-8 in conference), which won the first game, 10-0. The Panthers’ third-string pitcher Leslie Gerbin (2-2) pitched a three-hitter.

In the second game, Chapman won, 2-1. Olivas hit a home run in the sixth to tie the game and Kim Gray scored from third on a passed ball in the seventh. Deann Ford (16-8) didn’t allow an earned run and pitched a four-hitter while striking out seven.

In nonconference baseball:

Pepperdine 5, Chapman 2--Chapman (29-17) led, 2-1, through six innings but Pepperdine (29-10) scored three time in the seventh and one more in the eighth. Pete Coleman pitched nine innings, giving give up eight hits and five runs, two earned, for Chapman.

Jason White had a run-scoring double for Chapman. Steve Rodriquez had two hits and two RBIs for Pepperdine.

Southern California College 3, Cal State San Bernardino 1--Host SCC (21-19-1) scored three times in the first inning on a wild pitch, a bases-loaded walk to Frank Howell and a sacrifice fly by Brad Keays. Ken Ervin pitched the first five innings for the victory.

Southern California College used four pitchers in the final four innings to finish the game. Ryan Meredith pitched the ninth for the save.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Pepperdine 6, UC Irvine 3--Aaron Stolpman won the only singles match for host Irvine (11-11), ranked 24th in the nation. Howard Joffee, ranked 41st, won at No. 1 singles for Pepperdine (16-4), ranked 10th in the nation.
