Throngs of celebrants are expected to once again flock to Ventura’s California Beach Party on Saturday and Sunday, traipsing down a mile-long promenade that features blues, rock and surf music and many other attractions.

The oceanfront route stretches from the Ventura Pier south to the Ventura County Fairgrounds parking lot near Figueroa Street. The beach-spirited hoopla takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

According to director Faye Campbell, the seventh annual event is expected to attract more than 20,000 party-goers daily.

Many will be attracted to the musical lineup, which features bands from the 1950s and ‘60s showcased on three stages. Highlights include: The Surfaris (Pier Stage, 1 p.m. Saturday), Papa Doo Run Run (Pier Stage, 1 p.m. Sunday) and Big Daddy (Budweiser Stage, 1 p.m. Sunday).

Beach activities include Longboard Surfing Championships each day (6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at Surfers Point at the end of Figueroa Street. Also, watch for a kite-flying contest (2 p.m. Sunday), sand sculpture competition (9:30 a.m. Saturday) and a volleyball tournament continuing throughout the weekend.

Plenty of food and refreshments will be available, and many vendors will offer beach-related goods, from swimwear to surfboards.

A special area will be cordoned off for children’s activities. Youngsters can choose among craft projects, puppet shows and more from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission is $5 and $3 senior citizens; children under 12 enter free with an adult. For information, call 654-7830 or 648-2075.
