“We just wanted to throw a little party to introduce ourselves to New York,” explained Los Angeles designer Richard Tyler. His little party at the Royalton Hotel last week in Manhattan became a very L.A. kind of event. The paparazzi got wind of the affair and were lying in wait for Tyler’s customers. “When Susan Sarandon showed up it got hectic, but when Julia (Roberts) arrived it became completely out of hand. She’s been a big supporter and she flew in especially for the party. When she arrived, the paparazzi went crazy. We tried to do a fashion show, but it was chaos,” Tyler said.

* BACKWARD GLANCES: First there was Another Bad Creation, the rap group with the label tags dangling from their baseball caps. Now there is Kris Kross, an Atlanta-based rap duo of 13-year-olds with a platinum album called “Totally Crossed Out.” The members have twisted the basic hip-hop look, wearing their huge jeans (men’s Size 34), baseball shirts and caps backward. “The whole idea,” says band member Kris Smith, “is to be totally crossed out, doing the opposite of what’s usually done.”

* HOLD THE PILLBOX: In the new interactive computer game called “First Lady of Fashion,” the trick is to pick the right outfit among four possible ensembles that former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy wore for an official appearance. The game reveals the actual choice and explains why the others would have been inappropriate. Warner New Media and Time magazine invented the game, available in July for $79.88. * TWO FOR THE SHOW: Costume designer Dominique Aurientis, the French faux-bullionaire, says the bulk of her business has shifted from big, blinding earrings to outsize brooches. During an appearance at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills, the designer sold nine brooches in two hours, priced from $200 to $460. Aurientis says women are wearing her gold-plated 24-karat pins (a bunch of flowers, a star or some other natural shape) two at a time. “Anna Wintour always wears two,” she says of Vogue magazine’s fashion editor. That’s one on each lapel.

* LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON: When bunny meister Hugh Hefner turned 66 years old on April 9, Sherman Oaks retailer Rick Pallack presented him with a black velvet smoking jacket and red silk pajamas, the only kind of clothing Hef deigns to wear. April 9 is also the birthday of Hefner’s son, 2-year-old Marston, so Pallack gave him a smoking jacket and silk pajamas too. And just so Cooper, the 8-month-old Hefner baby, wouldn’t feel left out, he also received a matching set of lounge togs.
