Volunteers Honored for Anti-Abuse Work

Volunteer parent aides Mary McCarvel of Anaheim and Jane Dawson of Cerritos, who received special recognition awards, head a list of volunteers who were honored by the Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Center of Orange County in Orange.

Program analysts Jim Gaston and Mark Sierakowski and senior duplicating equipment operator Natalie Bergevin were named Saddleback Community College District’s Outstanding Classified Employees of 1992.

Staff members at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton have been honored as Outstanding Specialty Nurses for distinguished service to patients.

They are Louise MacCauley, Rose Girton, Suzanne Day and Marla Lalunio, Yorba Linda; Yvonne Ahmid and Marli Benewitz, Fullerton; Marge Dinacola, Placentia, and Marlene Lopez and Carol McCann, Buena Park.

Garden Grove resident and businessman Jim Oller has been named Elk of the Year for 1991-92 by Garden Grove Elks Lodge No. 1952.

Oller, the owner of Oller Electric Service, is credited wth saving the lodge a great deal of money by handling its electrical and maintenance work and upkeep of the meeting hall.

He was named Elk of the Month in October, 1988.

Vanessa Silvan of Laguna Niguel and Martha Sheppard of Tustin have been named to new marketing positions by the Ministry of Tourism, British Columbia, Canada. They will help to promote tourism.

Jim Garnett, director of Orange Coast College marketing and community relations, has been named vice president of the California Community College Public Relations Organization.

The Ralph Hudson Memorial Public Open Space Award, which honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions toward preserving open space in Southern California, has been presented to Anthony R. Moiso, president and chief executive officer of Santa Margarita Co.

The annual award was created by the California Landscape Architectural Student Scholarship Fund and is named after the late Hudson, whose pioneering efforts led to the establishment of 20,000 acres of open space in Orange County.

Staff of Distinction awards were presented by Fullerton College to five instructors for teaching excellence, campus leadership, college support service and service to the community.

Honorees are humanities instructor Alice A. Arana, of Fullerton; computer information systems instructor Melvin R. Collings, Yorba Linda; communications instructor Diana K Kelly, Brea; computer science office manager Edith A. Reinhardt, Whittier, and human studies instructor Dorothy H. Sailor, Fullerton.

Each received $250 cash awards as well as $500 President Awards.

Los Alamitos resident Miriam Burstein, a senior English major at UC Irvine, was awarded the Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities for 1992 and will receive financial support for up to three years of graduate study, including an annual stipend of $12,500.

Her primary interest is 19th-Century British literature.
