Dublin on DART

Regarding the article “Portrait of the Dartist” by Andrew Greeley (Traveling in Style, March 1): It is very clear to a Dubliner, like myself, that Greeley does not know Dublin. The DART is a great mode of transport and it is also a marvelous way for a visitor to see the Bay of Dublin in all its beauty. But I wouldn’t like a prospective visitor to take Greeley’s suggestions too literally.

For instance, he suggests visiting the beach or strand at Clontarf by getting off the DART at Killester and walking down to the water’s edge. It’s a fair piece to walk to the water’s edge from Killester to Clontarf and when you’d get there you wouldn’t find any beach or strand. If you walked about a mile further you would certainly come to Dollymount strand, but again, it is far from the DART.

I hope nobody will look for “the 18th-Century housing project,” Marino Crescent, across the tracks from Killester station. They will have quite a walk. It is much easier to reach by bus, as I found out while growing up there.

Andrew Greeley responds: I suppose it’s a matter of how much walking one wants to do. I estimate that the walk from Killester Station to the two other sites is about 35 minutes; less if one wants to walk rapidly. But if you are using the DART for a tour of Dublin, the whole idea is that you like to walk around the city, using the line as a base for such expeditions.
