Five Ventura County teen-agers are among 1,150 students nationwide named as Merit scholars.
The students chosen in the annual competition will receive scholarship awards between $500 and $2,000 a year, many of them renewable for up to four years, said Elaine Detweiler, spokeswoman for the National Merit Scholarship Corp.
The county winners are Raymond H. Diep of Agoura and Austin G. Sincock of Thousand Oaks, both students at Westlake High; Mark R. Shane of Oxnard, a student at Channel Islands High; and Anne M. Jensen and Amit Sahai, both Thousands Oaks residents and students at Thousand Oaks High.
Students were required to meet rigorous academic standards to qualify for the award, Detweiler said.
The screening committee also looked for recommendations by the school principal and a student’s involvement in extracurricular activities and interests, she said.
Two more groups of winners will be announced soon, Detweiler said.
