Long Beach Unified School District Supt. E. Tom Giugni announced Monday that he will step down in December from his job as head of the state’s fourth-largest school district.
At Monday’s board meeting, Giugni read a letter thanking board members, employees and parents for their support during his tenure at the 74,000-student district.
“Together we have accomplished a great deal to improve the system, but there is much yet to be done,” said Giugni, 61, who was superintendent of Sacramento’s public schools before taking the Long Beach job in 1986. “I can think of no better time for a change in leadership.”
He said it was time to return to Northern California and “new challenges.”
Board members praised Giugni for bringing in top administrators and reorganizing the school system to save money and increase effectiveness. They said a search will begin immediately for a successor.
