STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS ROUNDUP : Roenick Bounces Back as Blackhawks Advance

Share

It was probably fitting that Jerry Roenick would do the scoring when the Chicago Blackhawks became the first team to advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup.

Roenick, No. 2 in goal scoring during the regular season with 53, scored twice at St. Louis to lead the Blackhawks to a 2-1 victory. They won the series, 4-2.

The Blackhawks, by winning three in a row, earned the right to play the winner of the Minnesota-Detroit series. The winner will be determined Thursday night at Detroit.

The Blackhawks have won seven of eight playoff series against the Blues. The only time the Blues won was in 1988, Brent Sutter’s last season as a player. It is rumored that Sutter, in his fourth season as coach of the Blues, will be fired.

Roenick, who was benched for the second period of Game 5 because of poor play, was at his best even though he took a physical beating.

Roenick scored his third playoff goal halfway through the first period, then gave the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead at 7:54 of the second period.

After the Blues scored five minutes later, Roenick was flattened by a high stick wielded by the Blues’ Philippe Bozon at 13:35 of the second period.

Roenick lay on the ice for a few minutes, but returned to punish the Blues.

Vancouver 8, Winnipeg 3--Pavel Bure appears to have the Jets on the run.

The youngster from the former Soviet Union scored three goals at Winnipeg to draw the Canucks even in the best-of-seven series.

The Jets, behind goalie Rick Tabaracci, had taken a 3-1 lead in the series as he held the Smythe Division champions to eight goals in the four games.

But Bure, who scored one goal assisted on four others in an 8-2 Game 5 victory, put the Canucks ahead, 2-1, with his third goal of the playoffs midway through the first period. Bure scored twice during the third period.

Detroit 1, Minnesota 0--The Red Wings are another division winner making a comeback after losing three of the first four games of the series.

Sergei Federov scored a disputed goal at 16:13 of overtime at Bloomington, Minn., as the Red Wings tied the series, 3-3.

Tim Cheveldae, who started the Red Wings’ comeback with a shutout Sunday night, extended his scoreless string to 136 minutes.

Jon Casey matched the Red Wing star.

Late in the overtime, Federov carried the puck into the Minnesota zone, around a defenseman and fired a shot over Casey’s shoulder. The puck hit the back of the net and flew back outside. Federov didn’t know he had scored, and play continued.

Referee Rob Schick stopped play and a replay was ordered. It showed the puck went into the net.

Cheveldae stopped 34 shots, Casey 33. Cheveldae had played poorly in the first four games of the series.

The two victories have enabled the Red Wings, who won the Norris Division, to regain home ice. They will be favored to win the playoff Friday night.
