Second baseman Bobby Rose, who was struck on the left side of his helmet by Dave Stieb’s pitch Tuesday, was in Wednesday’s lineup, none the worse for his scare. He spent Tuesday night at Toronto’s Mt. Sinai Hospital but was released at 5 a.m. Wednesday after persuading doctors to let him go.

“I didn’t pick up the pitch. When it happened, I was pretty much in shock because I’d never been hit in the head before,” Rose said. “I don’t think he meant to hit me, and if he did I’m not going to say anything about it. I’m not that kind of guy . . . I wanted to stay in there (Tuesday) night. I’ve been hit before. I’m not going to be scared to go back in the batter’s box.”

Rose had one hit in four at-bats Wednesday.

Right fielder Von Hayes (strained left hamstring) sat out his second straight game. Manager Buck Rodgers said Hayes probably won’t play until the weekend. . . . A magnetic resonance imaging test performed Wednesday on pitcher Matt Keough left doctors optimistic about Keough’s future, club spokesman Larry Babcock said. Keough underwent emergency brain surgery after being struck on the head by a foul ball March 16 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
