A 10-week manhunt for violent criminals and drug dealers has led to the arrest of 209 people in the San Diego area, the U. S. Marshals Service announced Thursday.

Operation Gunsmoke, a combined effort by U.S. and San Diego law enforcement agencies, led to the arrest of gang members, drug dealers and others who have “evaded arrest, jumped bond or bail and managed to remain at large,” Richard Cameron, U.S. marshal for the Southern District of California, said. The sweep was a joint effort by the federal marshals, San Diego police, San Diego County marshals and Bureau of Alcohol and Tobacco and Firearms officials.

In San Diego, cash and property valued at $13,061, and guns, drugs and other contraband valued at $201,535 were seized over a 10-week period.

Operation Gunsmoke is part of “Project Triggerlock,” a national 40-city program designed to target the most violent of criminals, Cameron said. The project resulted in the arrest of 3,313 fugitives nationwide, Cameron said.
