SDSU Breezes Through First Round

Top-seeded San Diego State advanced easily and all four higher-seeded teams won in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference men’s tennis championship Thursday in Salt Lake City.

The Aztecs won all six singles matches in straight sets against Colorado State, with Joe McDonough defeating Kevin Ponis, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 1 singles. Second-seeded New Mexico defeated Hawaii, 5-1. No. 3 Utah defeated Texas El Paso, 5-1. The Aztecs will face No. 4 Brigham Young, a 5-4 victor over Air Force, in today’s semifinals at the Canyon Raquet Club.

UC San Diego defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 5-1, in a nonconference match. The Tritons (5-13) got victories from La Jolla High graduate Chad Morse, John Cross, Jeff Bethard, Vern Yarnell and Robert Ho. PLNC is 16-4.

Sinclair Bill of Santa Barbara was the only seeded player to lose in the round of 16 women’s 50 singles division of the National Hardcourt Tennis Championships at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Second-seeded Cathie Anderson of Del Mar, No. 3 Suella Bowden of Rancho Santa Fe, and unseeded Uta Hegberg of Oceanside advanced into the quarterfinals. In the women’s 60 singles round of 16, No. 3 Liz Harper and unseeded Margaret Quackenbush of Coronado were among players advancing.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers announced they have signed five free agents, former Charger defensive lineman Blaise Winter and four rookies. Winter returns to the Chargers after being traded to Green Bay in 1988. Other signees announced were running back Leon Brown from Temple, cornerback Cecil Doggette from West Virginia, guard Mitch Kaaialii from Hawaii, and running back Anthony Lenseigne from Eastern Washington.

SOFTBALL

Point Loma Nazarene catcher Robin Rabello was named first team All-District 3. Rabello led the district in hitting at .490. She also had 30 RBIs, six home runs, nine triples and 31 stolen bases. PLNC freshman infielder Missy Talbert was named to the second team.

BASEBALL

Dominick Dirkson homered and drove in two runs and Guy Cataldo had a pair of doubles to lead UCSD to a 6-3 nonconference victory over visiting Point Loma Nazarene (19-25). Bryan Thomason (5-2) won for the Tritons (26-6-1).
