Riley, Rose Among Leaders at WAC Championships

Kevin Riley and Rick Rose, both former San Diego County high school standouts, share the lead with two other golfers after Thursday’s opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Singing Hills Country Club.

Riley, who went to San Diego State out of Madison High, and Rose, a Colorado State golfer from Fallbrook, shot 69 on the par-72 Willow Glen Course and share the lead with Ramon Brobio of Brigham Young and Marty Romey of Utah.

Brobio was one of four BYU players to shoot 73 or lower, and the Cougars lead Utah in the team standings by five strokes, 285-290. SDSU is third at 293, followed closely by New Mexico (294), Wyoming (295) and Colorado State (298). Texas El Paso (302), Air Force (306) and Hawaii (311) complete the field.

After Riley, Dave Schnider and Tim Todd were the next best Aztecs at 74, followed by John Lovett at 76.

This morning’s second round and Saturday’s final round begin at 7:30 a.m. at Singing Hills.
