TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe Makes Quick Exit in Second Round in Spain

John McEnroe was ousted in the second round of the City of Madrid Grand Prix by Francisco Clavet of Spain, 6-2, 6-1, on Thursday.

Clavet, ranked No. 26 in the world, beat McEnroe in 1 hour 10 minutes.

The next opponent for Clavet is third-seeded Alberto Mancini of Argentina. Mancini defeated Fabrice Santoro of France, 6-0, 7-5.

In other second-round matches, Arnaud Boetsch of France defeated Martin Jaite of Argentina, 6-4, 6-2; No. 7 Carlos Costa of Spain ousted German Lopez of Spain, 6-2, 6-0, and Javier Sanchez of Spain outlasted Gabriel Markus of Argentina, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Steffi Graf of Germany and Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina scored impressive second-round victories in a WTA tournament at Hamburg, Germany.

Top-seeded Graf defeated Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-2, 6-3, and Sabatini beat Barbara Rittner of Germany, 6-1, 6-1.

Maleeva, 17, kept Graf running on the slow clay court with solid returns and varied shots, but she was no match for the German player who has won the tournament five years in a row.

Sixth-seeded Anke Huber of Germany had a solid 6-3, 6-2 victory over her former doubles partner, Jo Durie of Britain. Huber, 17, returned to action Wednesday after a three-month absence because of a sprained ankle.

Wimbledon champion Michael Stich and second-seeded Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia won second-round matches at the ATP tournament at Munich.

The top-seeded Stich defeated unseeded fellow German Arne Thoms, 6-3, 6-4, and Korda defeated unseeded Lars Joensson of Sweden, 6-4, 6-3.

Magnus Larsson of Sweden also advanced to the quarterfinals by beating seventh-seeded Omar Camporese of Italy, 6-2, 6-1.

Niklas Kulti, another Swede, defeated Goran Prpic of Croatia, 6-0, 7-5.

Andrej Medvedev of Ukraine defeated Rodolphe Gilbert of France, 6-2, 6-1, and will play today’s quarterfinal match against unseeded Markus Naewi of Germany.
