The Kings’ Wayne Gretzky will not play for Canada in the World Ice Hockey Championships underway in Czechoslovakia because he has a partially separated cartilage in his rib cage.

“He injured the rib cage in the first (NHL) game after the strike (on April 11),” Gretzky’s agent, Mike Barnett, said. “He played through it in the entire playoff series.”
