BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Grahe Leads With 2 Wins

Share

Joe Grahe has a 7.14 earned-run average, nearly four times the 1.80 of teammate Jim Abbott. But Grahe on Thursday became the first Angel pitcher to win two games this season. Abbott (1-3) has a no-decision and two defeats in his three tries for his second victory.

Grahe was almost sheepish about his accomplishment. He gave up eight hits and five runs, walked two and hit two batters over 5 1/3 innings, but the Angels’ eight-run outburst enabled him to get his first victory since April 14.

“It was kind of done with mirrors today,” Grahe said. “I just didn’t have a consistent groove. I didn’t have the feel I’ve had in my first three starts this year. I’m going to go back and take a peek at the films (of those games) and see if I can pick up anything. I was fortunate the team picked me up today, real fortunate.”

Mark Eichhorn blunted a threat in the sixth, coming in with runners on first and third and a run in. He gave up a sacrifice fly to Mark Lewis but ended the inning by getting Kenny Lofton to ground out. He then worked two uneventful innings, setting up Bryan Harvey for his sixth save.

“Ideally, I would have liked to get a double play, but you’re just trying to get outs and keep the game where it is,” he said.

Although weary after the Angels’ night game in Toronto Wednesday and an early wake-up call Thursday, Eichhorn said he would do it again if the result would be the same.

“Who needs sleep?” he said.

Catcher Lance Parrish received a cortisone injection in his right elbow after an examination by the Cleveland Indians’ team orthopedist, Louis Keppler. The doctor found an inflammation in the back of Parrish’s elbow from repetitive use. Parrish, who wasn’t scheduled to play Thursday, is listed as day to day. . . . The home runs by Junior Felix and Hubie Brooks gave the Angels 21 in as many games. They didn’t hit their 21st homer last season until their 35th game. . . . Leadoff hitter Luis Polonia, who leads the Angels with 12 walks, wants to exceed his 1991 total of 52 walks. “Seventy-five is my goal. Maybe 100,” Polonia said. He also had a bunt single in the fifth inning, his fifth bunt hit of the season. . . . Thursday’s game was only the sixth errorless performance by the Angels this season.
