KING CASE AFTERMATH: A CITY IN CRISIS : L.A. Riots Disturb Voting Plans in S.D.

The rioting in Los Angeles will delay the distribution of some voting materials and might disrupt absentee voting in San Diego County that was scheduled to begin Monday, the county registrar of voters said Friday.

The Los Angeles-based Merrill Corp., which prints the sample ballots and absentee balloting material for San Diego and San Bernardino counties, was scheduled to work around the clock this week, but “that schedule has been completely disrupted,” the registrar’s office said.

“A significant amount of the balloting material has not yet been printed or delivered to registrar of voters offices in San Diego and San Bernardino counties,” according to the registrar.

The mailing of sample ballots to San Diego County’s 1.25 million registered voters began April 27 and was to continue until May 22. The Los Angeles riots have delayed that schedule as well.

Voters who have not received their sample ballots by May 15 may request them by mail from the registrar of voters.

Preparation of materials for the actual balloting on Election Day, June 2, has not been disrupted, officials said.
