KING CASE AFTERMATH: A CITY IN CRISIS : Suspended Services and Temporary Closures

Here is a partial list of closed facilities and organizations as of late Friday afternoon. Some information may be outdated by today; please call where possible. Many services, such as bank branches and courts, were closed Friday and may reopen Monday. Pacific Bell on Friday ordered a delay in mandatory use of the new 310 area code, which was to have begun today. Until further notice, customers may continue using area code 213. GOVERNMENT OFFICES City: The Los Angeles Public Library’s temporary headquarters on Spring Street, as well as 62 city branch libraries, were closed Friday and will be closed today. A decision will be made over the weekend as to whether any will reopen Monday. Call (213) 612-3320.

There was no trash collection in South Los Angeles on Thursday or Friday. Regular pick-up should resume on Monday barring further disturbances. Normal trash collection schedules were followed on Friday in other areas.

County: All non-emergency facilities will be closed over the weekend, including county museums.

County health clinics and county parks within the curfew area were closed Friday. Decisions on which facilities will reopen Monday have yet to be made.

A total of 35 county libraries were closed Friday and will be closed today; which will reopen on Monday is undetermined.

These county-operated beaches closed Friday until further notice: Will Rogers, Venice, Dockweiler on Santa Monica Bay, and Cabrillo in San Pedro.

COURTS AND POLICE The Municipal, Superior and Criminal courthouses were closed Friday. It remained unclear whether they would re-open Monday. Federal courts were in session.

TRANSPORTATION The following RTD lines were canceled Friday: 1, 2, 3, 4, 37, 38, 40, 42, 48, 53, 55, 56, 60, 102, 107, 108, 110, 111, 112, 114, 115, 117, 119, 127, 128, 200, 209, 217, 304, 429, 442, and 576. There were some delays on lines still in service. RTD buses were picking up passengers after 6 p.m. Train service ended at 6 p.m. Friday as well. Regular bus and train services are expected to resume when the curfew is lifted. Watch for local bulletins or call (800) 252-7433 over the weekend. On Monday, call (800) 464-2111. BANKS About 30 branches of Wells Fargo Bank were closed Friday. Great Western Bank closed a majority of its branches Friday as well. BankAmerica said about 160 of its combined Bank of America and Security Pacific branches were closed Friday. Union Bank kept nearly all of its branches closed Friday. Most bank branches will reopen as conditions permit. Call the customer service number on your bank statement for more information.

POST OFFICES The following post offices will be open today from 8 a.m. to noon for residents to pick up Social Security and county checks. Identification will be necessary. Normal mail delivery in South Los Angeles is expected to resume on Monday, assuming conditions are safe.

ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOLS The Los Angeles Unified School District remained closed Friday; a decision as to whether to reopen Monday will be made late Sunday night. Call (213) 625-4000; in Spanish, (213) 625-4643. On Monday, for updates, call: (213) 625-6000. It remained unclear as to whether other school districts would reopen on Monday. Call your local district for updates.

For Roman Catholic elementary and high school information, call the Los Angeles Archdiocese Public Affairs Office on Monday at (213) 251-3215.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES USC campus officials expect to resume full operations Monday, including the spring semester final examinations scheduled for that day. Final exams that were postponed on Thursday and Friday will be rescheduled next week. Call (213) 740-6275.

It was unclear Friday which Cal State system universities would continue classes on Monday. Call the individual school for more information.

The Loyola Law School and Southwest University Law School are closed through Sunday.

All nine campuses and administrative offices in the Los Angeles Community College District will be closed through Sunday. Call (213) 891-2117.

(800) 870-1929. Operated by the Los Angeles Office of Emergency Management, this voice-mail line will help officials determine if the damage your home or business suffered will qualify for federal assistance, if it becomes available.

Be prepared to leave your name, address, telephone number and a brief description of the type of property damage. Watch for news reports to see when federal assistance becomes available.

MEDICAL HOT LINE

(800) 559-5252. Operators are taking calls on this special line set up for residents needing general first aid information or hospital referrals.

RED CROSS AID

People receiving Red Cross services at the First AME Church were moved late Friday to a converted shelter at Dorsey High School, 3537 Farmdale Ave. Blood donor offices were closed Friday and will also be closed today. They will reopen Monday. The public can call (213) 739-5200 for a 24-hour list of services.
