Mark Martin and Stanley Smith, both of whom saw first-round qualifying laps wiped out by NASCAR inspectors because of rule infractions, easily topped the second session of time trials for Sunday’s 500-mile stock car race at Talledega, Ala.
Martin posted a lap of 191.509 m.p.h. and will start 21st. Smith, a part-time driver from Chelsea, Ala., will begin 22nd after a lap of 190.223.
