A CITY IN CRISIS : Suspended Services and Temporary Closures

Here is a partial list of closed facilities and organizations as of late Saturday afternoon. Some information may be outdated by today; please call where possible. Many services, such as bank branches and courts, were closed Saturday and may reopen Monday. Pacific Bell on Friday ordered a delay in mandatory use of the new 310 area code, which was to have begun Saturday. Until further notice, customers may continue using area code 213.

GOVERNMENT OFFICES

City: The Los Angeles Public Library’s temporary headquarters on Spring Street, as well as 62 branch libraries, were closed Saturday and will be closed today. A decision will be made over the weekend as to whether any will reopen Monday. Call (213) 612-3320.

There has been no regular trash collection in South Los Angeles since Wednesday. Regular service should resume Monday, barring further disturbances.

County: All non-emergency facilities will be closed over the weekend, including county museums.

County health clinics and county parks within the county’s curfew area were closed Friday and will likely reopen Monday.

A total of 35 county libraries were closed Friday and will be closed at least until Monday.

These county-operated beaches will be closed until further notice: Will Rogers, Venice, Dockweiler on Santa Monica Bay, and Cabrillo in San Pedro. Santa Monica Pier will also be closed.

COURTS AND POLICE

The Municipal, Superior and Criminal courthouses were closed Friday. It remained unclear whether they would reopen Monday. Federal courts were in session.

TRANSPORTATION

The following RTD lines will not run Sunday: 10, 55, 56, 102, 107, 108, 110, 114, 115, 119, 200, and 209. There will be only partial service on lines 26, 38, 40, 81, 105, 204, 206, 207, 254, and 251. The Metro Blue Line will resume service at 4 a.m. Sunday and continue a normal weekend schedule until 7 p.m. Sunday. In addition to normal bus service, the RTD has provided 80 buses to transport police, firefighters and military units. The RTD will not provide normal bus service during curfew hours (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) Watch for local bulletins or call (800) 252-7433 over the weekend. On Monday, call (800) 464-2111. BANKS

Most bank branches in affected areas were closed Friday and Saturday but plan to reopen as conditions permit. Call the customer service number on your bank statement for more information.

POST OFFICES

Many post offices in South Los Angeles were were open Saturday morning for residents to pick up Social Security and county checks. Normal mail delivery in South Los Angeles is expected to resume on Monday, assuming conditions are safe.

ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOLS

The Los Angeles Unified School District remained closed Friday; a decision as to whether to reopen Monday will be made late Sunday night. Call (213) 625-4000; in Spanish, (213) 625-4643. For updates on Monday, call (213) 625-6000. It remained unclear as to whether other school districts would reopen on Monday. Call your local district for updates.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

USC officials expect to resume full operations Monday, including the spring semester final examinations scheduled for that day. Final exams that were postponed on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will be rescheduled. A new schedule for postponed exams will be announced Monday at noon. Call (213) 740-6275.

UCLA expects to resume classes Monday. Call (310) 206-7994.

It was unclear Friday which Cal State system universities would continue classes Monday. Call the individual school for more information.

The Loyola Law School and Southwestern University School of Law are closed through Sunday. For Southwestern information, call (213) 738-6700.

All nine campuses and administrative offices in the Los Angeles Community College District will be closed through Sunday. Call (213) 891-2117.

MEDICAL HOT LINE

(800) 559-5252 Operators are taking calls on this special line set up for residents needing general first aid information or hospital referrals.

RED CROSS AID

Those requesting general information and victims needing assistance can call the American Red Cross at (213) 739-4543. Two Red Cross shelters remain open for families and individuals whose homes or apartments have been destroyed by fire due to the civil disturbance:

Blood donor offices were closed Friday and Saturday but will reopen Monday.
