A SPECIAL REPORT: COPING WITH THE VIOLENCE

FUTURE WATCH: The televised destruction in Los Angeles is a preview of what the next big quake could look like in Orange County, says County Fire Department spokesman Dan Young. . . . There would be a lot of destruction in some areas and none elsewhere, and firefighters from other counties would assist. But there would probably be fewer fires, perhaps only 20 to 50 caused by gas leaks rather than the hundreds caused by arsonists. “Nothing is as destructive to a community as people,” he says. “Nature has never dealt a blow to the community as they have.”
