Columbus Tustin Middle School has become the first school in Southern California to reap the rewards of the Vons “Apples for Students” contest this year.

The school received three Apple computers and software after collecting grocery-store register tapes totaling nearly $500,000.

“Things like the Vons contest really help because people see that you are helping yourself and not just asking for donations,” Principal Bob Boies said. He said that last year, Columbus Tustin was the first school in Orange County to win computers from the 2-year-old Vons contest.

“We do all the competitions,” Boies added. “Funds are very limited, but we still want all we can get for our students.”

The competitive attitude among the students and staff at Columbus Tustin has helped the school add 65 computers in the past two years to the 15 it started with.

The school has also won encyclopedia sets and a laser printer, Boies said.
