Most Facilities to Reopen Today

As of Sunday afternoon, most of the facilities that were closed over the weekend were expected to reopen today. But some of the following information may be outdated by this morning; please call where possible.

Pacific Bell on Friday ordered a delay in mandatory use of the new 310 area code, which was to have begun Saturday. Until further notice, customers may continue using area code 213.

GOVERNMENT OFFICES

City: The Los Angeles Public Library’s temporary headquarters on Spring Street and all of its branch libraries, will reopen today.

Trash collection and postal service in South Los Angeles will resume, barring further disturbances.

County: All non-emergency facilities will reopen today, including the California Museum of Science and Industry.

County health clinics and county parks that were within the county’s curfew area will reopen today.

County libraries will reopen today.

These county-operated beaches will reopen: Will Rogers, Venice, Dockweiler on Santa Monica Bay, and Cabrillo in San Pedro. A decision had not been made on reopening Santa Monica Beach; call the Santa Monica Police Department (213) 395-9931.

COURTS AND POLICE

The Municipal, Superior and Criminal courthouses will reopen. Federal courts have remained open.

TRANSPORTATION

Off-ramps on the Harbor Freeway between Imperial Highway and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. are open.

The RTD will resume operations on 27 lines in the South Los Angeles area. The Metro Blue Line resumed a normal schedule on Sunday. In addition to normal bus service, the RTD has provided 80 buses to transport police, firefighters and military units.

BANKS

Founder National Bank at 3910 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. reopened Sunday for check-cashing business. Most bank branches in affected areas plan to reopen as conditions permit. Call the customer service number on your bank statement for more information.

POST OFFICES

Normal mail delivery in South Los Angeles will resume today, assuming conditions are safe.

ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOLS

Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Inglewood Unified School Districts reopen today. Compton Unified School District will reopen on Tuesday with a minimum day.

Roman Catholic elementary and high schools will reopen today.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

USC will resume full operations today, including spring semester final examinations as previously scheduled. A new schedule for postponed exams will be announced at noon today. Call (213) 740-6275.

UCLA will resume classes today, as will Cal State system universities, Loyola Law School and Southwestern University School of Law.

All nine campuses and administrative offices in the Los Angeles Community College District will resume today. The Doheny and Chalon campuses of Mt. St. Mary’s College will proceed as usual today, and final exams and graduation ceremonies will take place as planned.

TAXI RIDES

Beginning today, L.A. Taxi will offer subsidized rides for the next several days from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to grocery stores for residents in the Crenshaw, South Los Angeles and other hard-hit areas of the city. Riders will be charged $1 each way per person, with up to three shoppers sharing a cab, said Robert LeVels, who heads the effort. Call 213-627-7000 and request Operation Food Basket.

SOUTH LOS ANGELES ASSISTANCE

(800) 300-CITY. Councilwoman Rita Walters has established this South Los Angeles hot line for those who need general information and assistance in her district.

COMPTON HOT LINE

(310) 605-5543. City officials will take requests for additional security and provide information on food and health care services and rebuilding loans from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

PROPERTY DAMAGE HOT LINE

(800) 870-1929 Operated by the Los Angeles Office of Emergency Management, this voice-mail line will help officials determine if the damage your home or business suffered will qualify for federal assistance, if it becomes available.

Be prepared to leave your name, address, telephone number and a brief description of the type of property damage.

MEDICAL HOT LINE

(800) 559-5252 Operators are taking calls on this special line set up for residents needing general first aid information or hospital referrals.

RED CROSS AID

Those requesting general information and victims needing assistance can call the American Red Cross at (213) 739-4543. Two Red Cross shelters remain open for families and individuals whose homes or apartments have been destroyed by fire due to the civil disturbance:

Belmont High School, 1575 W. 2nd St., Los Angeles.

Blood donor offices will reopen today.
