The Cincinnati Reds activated pitcher Jose Rijo and put catcher Jeff Reed on the 15-day disabled list. Rijo has been disabled since April 18 by a sore right elbow. Reed will have surgery Tuesday to remove a bone spur in his right elbow. The Reds also swapped utility players, sending outfielder Geronimo Berroa outright to triple-A Nashville and acquiring infielder Darnell Coles. . . . Ken Griffey was scratched from the Seattle Mariners’ starting lineup because of a sore back. His status has been listed as day-to-day. Griffey hurt his back on Saturday night when he crashed into the center-field wall while attempting to catch a third-inning homer by Baltimore’s David Segui. He played the rest of the game, and hit a two-run homer in the Mariners’ 4-2 loss.

Montreal Expo catcher Gilberto Reyes completed his drug rehabilitation program and was sent to extended spring training in West Palm Beach, Fla. Reyes had been in the rehabilitation program since shortly after arbitrator George Nicolau ruled April 3 that Commissioner Fay Vincent improperly suspended the catcher for 60 days on Feb. 7 after a positive drug test in the Dominican Republic during December. “Gil has served his month on the disabled list and is in extended spring training getting evaluated so that he will be physically and mentally ready to play,” said his agent, Lisa Welsch. Because the Expos have no remaining options on Reyes, he could elect to become a free agent if Montreal attempts to assign him outright to the minor leagues. “He will not accept an assignment to triple A,” Welsch said. “That isn’t an option for him. Hopefully, someone else would pick him up if he became a free agent. But there could be a major injury in Montreal and that could change everything.” Montreal has three catchers on the major league roster: Darrin Fletcher, Gary Carter and Rick Cerone.
