Cookbook Awards: Take Your Pick

Share

On Saturday night, at the International Assn. of Culinary Professionals convention in Miami, the best cookbook in the United States was “Bread In Half the Time” by Linda West Eckhardt and Diana Collingwood Butts.

Two nights later, at the James Beard Book Awards in New York, it was James Peterson’s “Sauces: Classical and Contemporary Sauce Making.”

The dueling cookbook competitions could agree on only three prize-winning books: “Spirit of the Harvest: North American Indian Cooking,” by Beverly Cox and Martin Jacobs; “The Harry’s Bar Cookbook,” by Arrigo Cipriani, and “New Home Cooking,” by Florence Fabricant.

“Great Cakes,” by Carole Walters, which had been re-released after being pulled from circulation because it included a potentially poisonous recipe, won the Beard Awards Baking category.
