Loyola Marymount’s Plans for Expansion
An inaccuracy appeared in the April 2 article on Loyola Marymount University’s expansion. When LMU acquired the property in 1983, the university met with neighbors and presented a plan to house 500 students and a proposal for faculty housing. In 1985, the design was upscaled to 1,250 beds for students, a student center, a theater and a 900-car parking structure. There has never been any “scaling down” of the project, and in fact it has increased in size from the original design presented to the community.
LMU officials state they reduced the number of buildings, but this is misleading. The buildings were originally designed for 1,250 students and continue to be designed for 1,250 students. What came down in height for the dormitories spread out in mass. There was no reduction in height to the four outer apartment buildings, and all views to the community will be effectively blocked.
The project as presently designed remains highly incompatible with a single-family residential neighborhood.
